A career change can be good news and still make a long-distance relationship harder to schedule. Let excitement and uncertainty exist together. You do not need to settle every consequence during the first announcement.
Listen before redesigning the future
Ask what the change means to your partner and what they most need from you now. They may want celebration, help comparing options, or time to think. Advice offered too early can sound like a vote against their ambition.
Discuss the relationship effects separately
Book a later conversation about time zones, income changes, visits, and the possibility of moving. Distinguish a confirmed fact from an imagined outcome. “The role starts in November” is different from “We will never have evenings together.”
Try a temporary routine
Treat the first weeks as a trial schedule. Choose one reliable connection point and revisit it once the new workload is clearer. A different routine can support the same commitment; it need not reproduce your old calendar.
Ask “What part of this change feels exciting, and what part feels lonely?” Make room for an answer that includes both.
