“How was your day?” can be a kind question and still produce the same two-word answer every night. A smaller question often gives your partner an easier place to begin.
Ask about a scene
Try “What was the most unexpectedly funny moment?” or “When did you wish I had been there?” These questions invite a specific memory. They work after a busy day because the person does not have to summarize everything.
Follow the answer
If they mention a difficult meeting, ask what made it difficult before changing subjects. Curiosity matters more than having a long list of clever prompts. Sometimes the most connected conversation begins with an ordinary follow-up.
Leave room to pass
A question should be an invitation, not an extraction tool. Let your partner say they are tired or do not want to unpack something yet. Offer your own small story so the exchange does not feel like an interview.
Ask “If today were an episode, what would its title be?” Then ask what scene earned that title.
