Make a simple emergency contact plan across distance

Know what to do if a real emergency happens, without treating an ordinary delayed reply as one.

Distance makes it useful to distinguish “I cannot reach you” from “I have a concrete reason to believe you need urgent help.” Agree on that distinction while things are calm.

Exchange information by consent

If you both want a plan, decide which trusted local contact could be reached in a genuine emergency. Ask that person's permission before relying on them. Keep shared information limited to what is necessary and update it when circumstances change.

Define the urgent pathway

Discuss the kinds of situations that would justify contacting local help and how to find emergency services in each location. A busy afternoon, a sleeping phone, or an unanswered message alone should not become an excuse for surveillance.

Keep responsibility realistic

A partner in another place may not be able to coordinate an emergency response. Local professionals and trusted people nearby matter. If there is immediate danger, contact appropriate local emergency services rather than waiting for an app notification.

Try together

Write a short plan with one local contact, one emergency-service route, and a clear statement of when the plan should be used.

A little closer, every day.
