Be a teammate, not your partner's habit manager

Accountability works best when the person pursuing the goal decides what support they want.

It can be lovely to have someone cheering for your training arc. It feels different when every conversation turns into a progress inspection. Agree on the role before agreeing on the reminder.

Let the goal owner choose

Ask whether they want a reminder, company, encouragement, or no involvement. They might want a quiet study call but dislike being asked about completed pages. Consent to one kind of help is not permission to supervise everything.

Choose a specific check-in

“Ask me on Friday whether I booked the appointment” is clearer than “Keep me accountable.” Agree on how often to ask and what to do if the answer is no. A missed goal does not need a lecture disguised as motivation.

Keep affection unconditional

Do not reward progress with attention or withdraw warmth after a setback. Celebrate effort, but leave room for changed priorities. Your relationship should remain a place to be a person, not another performance review.

Try together

Use this template: “My goal is __. The support I want is __. Please do not __. Let's review this on __.”

A little closer, every day.
