When social media makes you feel left out

Treat a post as a small piece of context, not a complete account of your partner's intentions.

A photo can arrive without the conversation that would make it easy to understand. Before reacting, notice the difference between what you saw and the story you immediately attached to it.

Pause the investigation

Repeatedly checking likes, follows, or online status rarely gives you the whole picture. Step away long enough to identify the actual feeling: jealousy, loneliness, embarrassment, or uncertainty. Naming it can help you ask a clearer question.

Ask directly and respectfully

Try “I saw the photo and realized I felt left out. Can you tell me about the evening?” Avoid making a public comment or posting an indirect response. A private conversation gives both people more room to explain themselves.

Discuss posting preferences

Agree on what relationship details, photos, and tags are welcome. Keep those agreements mutual. A preference about privacy should not become a rule that isolates your partner or gives you control over every social interaction.

Try together

Choose one social-media situation that regularly creates confusion and agree on a simple expectation around it.
