It is difficult to be each other's calm place when neither person feels calm. You can acknowledge that limit without withdrawing affection or turning the week into a competition over whose stress is worse.
Compare capacity honestly
Each say what is taking energy and what you can realistically offer tonight. One person may want to talk while the other can only listen briefly. Clear limits can prevent a supportive call from becoming another source of exhaustion.
Choose practical relief
Offer one small action if it is welcome: helping organize a plan, postponing a nonurgent decision, or arranging a simpler date. Do not assume your partner wants you to manage their responsibilities. Ask before taking over.
Keep other supports active
Protect rest, local friendships, and professional support when needed. Your relationship can be part of a support system without becoming the whole system. If stress is persistent or disrupting daily life, it deserves attention beyond a better call schedule.
Ask “What can we take off our shared plate this week?” Remove one optional expectation and choose when to revisit it.
