You may miss holding hands, falling asleep nearby, or simply sharing the same sofa. Talking about that absence can be intimate without requiring either person to turn the conversation sexual.
Be specific about the feeling
Try “I miss sitting next to you while we do separate things.” A concrete description gives your partner something to understand. They may miss a different kind of closeness, and both experiences can belong in the conversation.
Offer choices for tonight
A quiet call, a voice note, or planning part of the next visit may help. Ask rather than prescribe. For adult couples, more intimate conversation is one optional possibility, not the expected response to missing physical closeness.
Keep future affection unpromised
Looking forward to a reunion does not establish consent to a particular kind of touch. Discuss preferences, then check in again when you meet. No one owes physical affection because the separation has been long or the travel was expensive.
Finish “The ordinary thing I miss most is…” and listen without trying to replace or fix it immediately.
