How to offer support when your partner feels anxious

Ask what would help, stay within your capacity, and make room for support close to them.

Distance can make you wish you could fix a difficult moment immediately. You can offer care without needing to diagnose the feeling or find the perfect sentence. Start by asking what kind of company is welcome.

Offer choices instead of instructions

Try “Would you like me to listen, distract you, or help think through a next step?” Respect a preference to be quiet. If they already have a coping or care plan, ask how you can support the plan they chose.

Be honest about availability

If you cannot stay on a call, say when you can reconnect and help identify someone nearby if they want that. Avoid promising round-the-clock access. Sustainable support includes boundaries and other trusted people.

Know when more help matters

Anxiety that is persistent, worsening, or interfering with daily life is a reason to consider professional help. If someone may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency support. A couples app is not a crisis service or treatment.

Try together

During a calm moment, ask “What helps when you feel overwhelmed, and what do people say that makes it worse?”

A little closer, every day.
