A conversation about closeness can feel easier when it happens outside a romantic moment. You can ask what is working without creating pressure to prove the answer immediately.
Open with an invitation
Try “Could we talk about what helps us feel close lately?” Check that the time is suitable. Give each person room to describe emotional as well as physical affection, and allow topics that someone is not ready to discuss.
Use three plain questions
Ask what has felt good, what has felt uncomfortable or missing, and what you would like to try differently. Listen to the answer before proposing a compromise. A boundary does not need to become a negotiation just because it disappoints you.
Close without an assignment
You can agree to revisit the conversation rather than scheduling an intimate activity. For adult couples, any later participation still requires current consent. Talking openly does not create a future obligation.
Finish with “One thing I want you to know about my comfort right now is…” Thank each other for being clear.
